A really cool camera is the National Geographic Explorer 3 Actioncam. With this camera you can take 4K video at 30 frames per second and 16 megapixel photos. It also comes with a waterproof housing that can withstand the penetration of water to a depth of 30 meters.

Technical properties

Optically, the National Geographic action camera does not seem to differ that much from competing products.

On the backside there is a 2 inch LCD screen. The camera also has a WLAN function and can therefore be coupled with other devices.

side view

On the side, there are several connectors, including a Micro HDMI connector, Micro USB and a compartment for a Micro SD card.

But in the end, it is the inner values that decide!

Image sensor, resolution and memory

The SONY IMX179 sensor and the chipset Allwinner V3 is installed. You can set different resolution variants and thus different image formats, frequencies and so on.

The following video resolution formats are available in the camera menu:

  • 3840×2160 interpolated (30 fps)
  • 2.7k (30 fps)
  • 1920×1080 (60 fps)
  • 1280×720 (120 fps)

Unfortunately we have to say that the 4K resolution is an interpolated representation. Thereby from the 2.7K resolution by adding different color gradations in the form of pixels a 4K resolution. If you don’t like that, you can also use the normal 2.7K resolution to record videos, which also have a very good quality

You can also take pictures in different resolutions. In the menu you can select them: 16 MP, 12 MP, 10 MP, 8 MP, 5 MP, 3 MP, 1 MP.

You can easily save the pictures on a Micro SD card. This card can be easily inserted into the camera. Memory cards up to a capacity of 64 Gbyte are suitable for this purpose.

Unfortunately such a storage medium is not included in the scope of delivery. In our opinion you should format the card before using it for the first time!

Thanks to the 170 degree wide angle lens, the camera can capture enough light and the pictures don’t look too dark even in the twilight.

Recording Modes

There are some cool features that are pre-programmed and you can choose to benefit from unique effects.

These include the time-lapse function and the self-timer.

Battery

scope of delivery

The scope of delivery includes 2 batteries with a charging capacity of 1050 mAh each.

This allows you to record between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on how the camera is used, and then replace the battery.

  • Up to 30 meter waterproof case included in delivery and therefore perfect for divers & snorkelers
  • 2 rechargeable batteries included in delivery
  • Wide range of accessories, including bicycle and motorcycle adapters

Conclusion

recording

The set of the National Geographic Explorer camera includes a lot of accessories.

In addition, the ActionCam shines with versatile features and technical details. What bothers us a bit is the fact that the manufacturer works with an interpolated 4K and not with a real 4K resolution. Otherwise, the model is absolutely recommendable.
