Those of you who have heard of mixed reality will be thrilled with the drone we present in this report.
This is the Walkera 15004550 Aibao Quadrocopter. The model has many different functions. Among other things you can enjoy “augmented reality” in FPV mode. The reality is thus virtually extended.
In this mode you can fly virtual items and tracks, furthermore it is possible to interact with these things. It is possible to use this with a normal mobile device like a smartphone/tablet or to experience the whole story even more real with FPV glasses.
The flight characteristics of the drone itself are also particularly good. The Walkera Aibao delivers fairly high quality images, thanks to its 16 megapixel camera and 4K resolution. The image is not mechanically stabilized by a gimbal system, that happens in the software.
Other technical features
Walkera is well known for its wide variety of remote controlled aircraft. The manufacturer has brought more and more different drone models on the market, especially in the field of FPV racing drones they are very popular and well known.
Design
And this is exactly what is reflected in the Walkera Aibao drone. From the quality of workmanship itself, the model is somewhat reminiscent of the drones from DJI (the market leader), only the appearance is different.
But all in all, the design of the quadrocopter is quite successful, the Aibao looks very modern and does not make an inferior impression. It has a streamlined design.
The Walkera helicopter weighs 570 grams without the battery. It belongs rather to the medium-sized models, but should not be assigned to the range of mini drones. It has the following dimensions: 230 x 230 x 151 mm. In cross section the Aibao measures about 280 mm.
The landing envelopes are also somewhat reminiscent of the DJI models, especially the DJI Phantom series
Camera
Really cool is the camera of the Walkera Aibao. The 4K camera delivers extremely high quality video at 25 frames per second and thanks to the 16 megapixel photo sensor, the pictures are razor sharp.
Additionally there is a FPV function. The drone pilot can control the model from the ego perspective. The images are delivered live or in almost real time to the remote control and the connected terminal. Live recordings can be viewed there in HD quality.
The maximum range of the live image transmission is 1500 meters. Compared to other models, this is enormously far, especially if you keep the price of the drone in mind.
The integrated software gimbal system works by internally extracting the rectangular image from the fisheye lens and playing it back live or recording it on a storage medium. We have already had good experience with a software-based gimbal solution with the Parrot Bebop 2.
Battery and flight time
A 5200 mAh strong battery is installed in the drone. It supplies the electric motors with electricity and ensures a maximum flight time of approx. 18 minutes. It is a 2S LiPo.
The charging time is approximately 120 minutes, for this purpose a charger is included in the scope of delivery.
Remote control and range
The remote control operates at a frequency of 2.4 Ghz and has a 2S LiPo battery with a charging capacity of 3000 mAh. Normally the battery of the remote control can withstand several charging cycles of the flight battery.
When flying the drone, the maximum transmission range is about 1.5 km, but remember that within Germany you are only allowed to fly as far as you can see the drone under the prevailing conditions on sight!
Above it is a holder, here smartphones and tablets can be attached and connected to the remote control. The image transfer works via WLAN to the smartphone or tablet.
Automatic take-off and landing, as well as Return To Home can be initiated via buttons on the remote control.
Drive, control and flight characteristics
Walkera is quite experienced and thanks to the latest advanced manufacturing technology, the Walkera Aibao’s electric drive systems have a higher performance and a much improved efficiency. Propeller design also plays an important role here.
Rotor blades must be neither too large nor too small and must have a certain ergonomics, which is exactly what the manufacturer has taken into account.
Due to the sophisticated sensor technology the model can also be controlled very easily. Even beginners should have no problem keeping the quadrocopter in the air.
Flight modes
Despite its low price, the Walkera model has many flight modes.
These include orbit, dual GPS, waypoints, position hold and augmented reality. We will briefly discuss the individual flight modes.
Orbit:
In this flight mode the drone orbits a defined location. You can set your individual radius in the app and then switch to orbit flight. A big advantage of the orbit mode is that the pictures that are taken during the flight look very professional, because a human could hardly fly the drone in a perfect circle like the autopilot does.
Waypoints:
Here you can set on a map which is displayed on your smartphone or tablet, which waypoints the drone should fly. The Walkera Aibao is based on the previously defined GPS coordinates.
Dual-GPS:
This model uses GPS and GLONASS protocols. These enable location data to be exchanged with even greater accuracy. The quadrocopter is thus even safer in the air and the flight modes function more reliably.
Position Hold:
This means that the drone automatically switches to hover flight and maintains this position. Normally this happens as soon as you release the control stick.
Augmented Reality:
The Walkera Aubao drone is one of the first quadrocopters to have this function. “Augmented reality” means “augmented reality”. You can view and interact with virtual objects and an augmented environment on the FPV image.
For example there is a Racing Mode, Combat Mode and Collect Mode. So you can do a lot virtually, for example racing or shooting down enemies. This is unique so far and in fact, the extended virtual reality is not so well known yet.
