Syma X5SW Test and Review

The Syma X5SW FPV Quadrocopter is very similar to the Syma X5C in construction and design, but differs in performance and some features from its predecessor.

With the help of a smartphone and the built-in HD camera, it is possible to fly the drone in real time in FPV mode. And this for a price of about 50 – 60 €, which we consider absolutely fair.

Flight characteristics and flight modes

Thanks to the 6-axis gyroscope with which the Syma X5SW drone is equipped, it is suitable for flying both indoors and outdoors and copes quite well with gusts of wind. In addition, anyone can steer it without fear of crashing, as the operation in headless mode is very easy.

Basically 2 different flight modes are available to the pilot: The normal mode, which is more suitable for advanced pilots and the headless mode. The headless mode, which means “the headless mode”, is perfect for beginners. In this mode, the Syma X5 SW drone always flies exactly as the pilot controls it, regardless of how the front (head) of the drone faces the pilot. Assuming the Syma X5 SW is facing the pilot and the pilot pushes the left stick away from him, the drone will not fly towards the pilot but away from him.

So you don’t have to rethink, because the aircraft always acts from the pilot’s point of view and this is exactly what makes flying so easy in combination with the 6 axis gyroscope, which balances the movements. In our opinion you can already start flying in advanced mode after the first 2-3 battery charges, even if you had no flying experience as a pilot.

Further special features are the 360 degree 3D flights, round flights and rolls, which can be adjusted. This makes the drone more attractive for this price.

Compared to the previous model Syma X5C, the X5SW is a bit more powerful and has more features. We also think that the design is a bit more elegant. Wind speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour are no particular obstacle for the drone, but it can happen that in gusts of wind above 30 kilometers per hour, the Syma X5SW deviates from its flight path and hovers against an obstacle. We therefore recommend that you fly the drone in as large an open space as possible where there are no objects standing around. Ideally on a large field or meadow.

Since there is no wind in the interior, it can be manoeuvred through the apartment without any problems and can be steered in a target-oriented manner.

Is the Syma X5SW really so much better than the Syma X5C?

There are a few points that have improved substantially, although there is not much difference in price.

For example, the flight range has increased from 50 meters to 100 meters. There are also some technical improvements, for example improved electronics and a 5.8 Ghz wifi network to which you can connect your smartphone or tablet. These technical improvements make it possible to fly the Syma X5SW in First Person View with the help of an app that exists for both IOS operating systems and Android.

This feature was not available on the predecessor Syma X5C! With the Syma X5SW you can take much better aerial shots with the camera, because the video is transmitted live to your smartphone or tablet screen!

Both drones can be controlled by a 2.4 Ghz radio control system and the flight characteristics are quite similar. The feeling when steering the drones is hardly to distinguish. Both are very stable in the air, hold their position automatically and are very easy to fly. For beginners in this field, however, the first person view function of the Syma X5SW is particularly exciting!

What we do not like about the Syma X5SW drone!

Just as with the previous model, the short flight time with quite a long loading time disturbs us.

But you can easily buy several battery packs, they are quite cheap. It is only important to land in time as soon as the battery charge is low!

We didn’t like the range of 100 meters either. Because the fun of flying really starts there in the First Person View. However, there are laws in Germany which state that a drone can only be flown within visual range anyway. A drone can still be seen at a distance of 200 meters, but then it’s over. The 100 meter range is also completely normal and okay for this price.

The model is a bit more expensive than its predecessor X5C, but that’s grumbling on a high level, because, as already explained, the X5SW has new features that significantly improve the flying experience. The price difference is about 20-25 €, depending on the shop you buy from. At Amazon we found the Syma X5SW at a very reasonable price.

Conclusion

The Syma X5SW, just like its predecessor Syma X5C, is an excellent remote controlled flying object at an incredibly good price/performance ratio. The quality and workmanship has convinced us and this although the drone is so inexpensive. In our opinion, the X5SW could have been offered for over 100 €.

Thanks to the headless flight mode, it is ideal for beginners in particular to slowly get used to flying a quadrocopter. Buyers report again and again how enthusiastic they are about this drone. From us there is also a very clear recommendation to buy this drone! Have fun with the Syma X5SW :-).
