Quite new on the market is the Autel Evo Quadrocopter, which makes a very high quality impression. And that’s why we took a closer look at this model.
The Evo has similar features to DJI‘s Mavic Pro Quadrocopter and is also in this price range. Among other things, it has obstacle detection fore and aft, but not only that, it flies around objects quite intelligently and doesn’t just stop in the air as soon as an obstacle gets in its way.
Further technical details, what you can expect with the Evo drone, what you should consider when buying it and if the model is really good, you will find out in this report.
Technical details
Vision positioning system
Besides the perfect implementation of obstacle detection with evasive maneuvers, you can also rely on a very sophisticated vision positioning system, which is located on the underside of the drone. The system works differently depending on the surface.
The performance of the vision positioning system is influenced by whichever surface is currently in view. We recommend not to rely on the Vision Positioning System when flying over water, transparent surfaces, moving objects and surfaces without a clear pattern or texture. Otherwise it does a very good job and detects the objects without problems.
Camera
The Evo drone is delivered with a 4k camera, which has 12 megapixels and is installed on a 3-axis gimbal. With this camera you can not only create great 4k photos, but also UHD videos with up to 60 frames per second.
The Evo camera benefits from a rather wide field of view (FOV) of 94 degrees. A higher field of view is important to have a better focal length of the camera at hand and to be able to display objects in farther away areas better due to a better focal length. This of course allows very detailed and natural images. Furthermore, image and video recordings have a high color depth.
Design
The design is quite reminiscent of Parrot’s Anafi drone and of course the DJI Mavic Pro series. Visually, the Evo Quadrocopter is quite well made, but it gives the impression that many manufacturers want to copy the DJI drones.
Autel’s Evo model also has foldable booms, so this is a foldable drone. The propellers can also be folded, making the quadrocopter so small that it fits comfortably into small backpacks or into the glove compartment of the car. The first optical impression is very good, especially if you consider that this is the first drone from the manufacturer Autel.
Typical for Autel is the orange design, which the manufacturer has incorporated into the model on the underside.
App, features and modes
The app functions and modes of the drone were of course not spared either. The Evo Quadrocopter shines with a multitude of important features and tracking systems. The app is available for both Android and IOS systems.
Among other things there is a kind of “Follow Me” mode, where you can frame an object, which the intelligent camera drone then follows.
When used on your device (smartphone, tablet), you can view important telemetry data such as altitude, time and distance, as well as the live FPV image currently captured by the Evo camera. In the app you can select flight functions such as Orbit, GPS Follow, Dynamic Track, Viewpoint and Waypoint based flight planning and configure them according to your needs, similar to the way you already know it from DJI models.
Really cool is the 3D mapping function, so you can do surveying and industrial planning. So the Evo Drone from Autel is also a model for companies, which should be taken into consideration when choosing the right aircraft.
Range, flight time and control behaviour
The range of the transmitter is 7 kilometers. The recently released DJI Mavic 2 Pro reaches a similar transmission distance. However, in Germany you are only allowed to fly a drone within visual range. This puts the advantage of a higher transmission range into perspective, unless you fly abroad and want to test it. Every model aircraft with a takeoff weight of 250 g or more must also be marked with your address and name, this applies to this model.
Also the flight time of about 30 minutes reminds of the Mavic Pro series. Of course you can change the battery and fly even longer, but you will have to make a stopover for this. A battery charger is included in the delivery.
Remote control
A great accessory is the remote control, in which a 3.3 inch OLED display has been installed. This also shows important flight data. Due to the high performance of the transmitter, the remote control not only has a high signal transmission and range, but also a very stable signal transmission.
Scope of delivery – What is all included?
In the scope of supply is everything you need to fly the drone immediately. We only recommend to charge the battery completely before take-off.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Autel Evo drone
The Evo drone is quite well equipped compared to other aircraft in its class, but the price is still around a proud €900. Therefore you should take a close look at the purchase. We have summarized the most important advantages and disadvantages in an overview:
Advantages:
- Long flight time of about half an hour
- Visually mega well done – drone is also foldable and can be transported everywhere
- Many great intelligent flight modes, including autonomous flight function like Orbit, GPS Follow
, Dynamic Track, Viewpoint, Waypoint based flight planning - The remote control has a controller with a 3.3 inch OLED display, on which the FPV live image can also be viewed
- For the Evo drone there is an app in which all telemetry data is displayed and the FPV live image can be viewed
- Unique additional function: 3D Mapping function, for example for measurements
- FOV (field of view) is 94 degrees
- 4k camera with 3 axis gimbal and 12 MP
- The images look very natural
- Obstacle detection front and rear, as well as Vision Positioning System on the underside – obstacles are flown around intelligently
Cons:
- The price of the Autel Evo drone is not necessarily in the segment that everyone can afford
Conclusion on the Autel Evo Drone
Here we have a quadrocopter that is the first to come very close to the DJI Mavic Pro model, both visually and technically.
Critics will now say that this is Autel’s first drone and there is no telling how it will perform in long-term tests. This is quite true, but you have to keep in mind that Autel has made a name for himself in robotics. Highly educated engineers and specialists with years of experience in this field have been at work here. That is why the inner values of the Evo leave nothing to be desired.
It will still take some time before the manufacturer has positioned itself correctly in the drone market, but we could imagine that the models will be just as good or even better than those of the manufacturers Yuneec or Parrot.

Competitor models in comparison
Interestingly, there are some competing models which are similarly priced and have similar features. We have briefly summarized the most important ones.
Parrot Anafi
The Parrot Anafi was also launched in 2018. It also has the typical design of the DJI Mavic Pro series, with foldable booms and folding propellers.
Your Ultra HD camera delivers razor sharp photo and video recordings.
Unfortunately the Anafi does not have any obstacle detection, but it also costs a little less. Furthermore, it must be said that many flight modes are not standard. Special app functions like the Follow Me mode have to be bought free first. This is typical for Parrot and has already heated up many minds in the drone scene.
Nevertheless – if you’re looking for a great drone model for less than 1000€ and don’t attach great importance to technical gadgets, the Parrot Anafi is a very good choice.

DJI Mavic
This model hit the drone market like a bomb some time ago. Everybody was talking about the new Mavic Pro from DJI and they praised it to the seventh heaven. The experience of numerous amateur and professional pilots confirmed the technical advantages of the Mavic Pro.
Other manufacturers have jumped on this hype and gradually models came out which are very similar in design to the Mavic drone.
Even if the manufacturers copy the outer appearance very well, the inner values also count.
Among other things, the DJI Mavic Pro shines with obstacle detection, 4K camera and an excellent flying experience. Find out more in the Mavic Pro review.
DJI Phantom
A serious competitor for the Evo drone is the DJI Phantom 4 Pro. Although it has no foldable outriggers, it has a very powerful camera with which you can record 60 frames per second at 4K video quality. The photo sensor has 20 megapixels and the quadrocopter has a vision system, i.e. obstacle detection.
Of course, the Phantom 4 Pro costs several hundred euros more. This increases the price/performance value of the Autel Evo drone.
