The DJI OSMO Pocket Cam is a handheld camera with a 3-axis gimbal. The manufacturer is known for its enormously high-quality quadrocopters. As DJI has a lot of experience in the development of stabilizer systems for drone cameras, it can be assumed that the manufacturer’s handheld cameras are also of high quality.

We have taken a closer look at the OSMO Pocket and in this review we explain what to expect and if the price for this camera is justified.

Technical features

The OSMO Pocket is quite easy to use, has the smallest electronic stabilizer that the manufacturer DJI has developed so far and provides a well-balanced video material.

If you move the camera’s hand piece to the right or left, the photo sensor and the captured image will always remain in a horizontal position.

Often such cameras are used because they can be held comfortably in the hand without having to use a tripod or similar. They are small enough for professional use and are available in different designs and gimbal systems.

The Osmo Pocket is stabilized on three axes and thus compensates the smallest movements in real time. So your steps do not influence the recorded video material and the filming looks like the camera is “floating”.

Design

Design

The look is quite futuristic and noble. In any case, the camera does not make a cheaply processed impression. Overall, the OSMO Pocket weighs 116 grams and has the following dimensions: 122 mm x 29 mm x 37 mm. It has a universal interface to which you can connect an increasing number of interesting accessories.

In addition, it is possible to connect the cam to your smartphone or tablet and transfer photos and videos directly to your device.

The camera can be controlled via a small touch display and a few buttons. These are positioned in such a way that the cam can be easily controlled while it is comfortably in the hand.

The built-in cooling system is quite extraordinary. The Osmo Pocket generates a lot of heat due to its high performance. This heat is dissipated by a gentle cooling system, silently and passively.

The gimbal system uses a mechanical stabilization platform with a brushless motor that keeps the camera in the right position at all times.

Image sensor, resolution and memory

This camera model has a ½.3 inch photo sensor with a field of view of 80 degrees. A F2.0 aperture is also used.

We were particularly impressed by the video performance, which is 60 frames per second and a resolution of 4K UHD. The maximum data rate is 100 Mbit/s.

Photos can be taken with 12 megapixels, the pixel size is about 1.55 μm.

As memory, a Micro SD card is used, which you have to buy additionally.

The camera can record up to 140 minutes of video when the battery is fully charged.

Menu navigation and recording modes

Controls

In our opinion, the menu navigation is really smart and comfortable. By wiping up and down on the touchscreen, you can find your way around pretty quickly.

The camera has several modes that allow you to quickly and easily take your photo and video performance to a new level.

Active Track:

Active Track is a feature most of you may be familiar with from the DJI drones. With this feature, you simply tap on an object on the screen once you’re in Active Track mode and the gimbal will always align itself so that the camera tracks the object. You can also switch to selfie mode, which activates face tracking, where the Osmo Pocket automatically follows your face.

Panoramic shots:

In this mode you can take wide shots of a beautiful landscape or other surroundings. The panoramic shots are arranged in 3 x 3 format.

Night Shot:

If you are in an environment with few light sources, the Osmo Pocket will detect this and adjust the exposure time accordingly. This results in a much brighter photo and video material.

Moving Time Lapse Mode

Moving time-lapse recordings combine hours of footage with smooth tracking shots, resulting in particularly interesting videos. Be sure to try this mode.

Pro mode:

This feature allows you to set an exposure time of 2 to 3 seconds.

You can also make other settings regarding aperture and ISO value. You can also take photos in RAW format and record videos in D-Cinelike quality.

Thanks to the DJI Mimo App, you have a comprehensive editor for these and other functions at your disposal. So you can easily make simple settings and edit your photos and videos.

Recorded photos and videos can be overlaid with cool templates, watermarks, stickers, filters and music.
