A very cheap action camera, which is on the market since the middle of 2017, obviously has a very good price/performance ratio, because you get a 4K camera with 14 megapixels for about 100€. But if the Rollei Actioncam 530 is really worth its money and if there are better alternatives, you can find out in our test report and Rollei video review.
Scope of delivery – What’s in it?
The scope of delivery is quite average for the price range of this action camera and not particularly unusual. The package includes many things. However, one could have added a few more bracket components. The scope of delivery of the Rollei Actioncam 530 consists of
- Rollei Actioncam 530
- Underwater protective housing with exchangeable rear panel (1x for diving, 1x as splash water protection)
- Lithium-ion battery with 1050 mAh
- 1x Safety Pad Curved with 3M sticker
- 1x Safety Pad Flat with 3M sticker
- 1x 2-component rotary knob
- 1x holder Basic
- Remote control
- USB cable
- Manual
Technical details and special features
The ActionCam appears robust, compact and is waterproof to a depth of about 40 meters. With battery it weighs only 79 g, and has minimal dimensions: 6.1 cm wide, 4.2 cm high and 3.4 cm deep. It has a 14-megapixel photo sensor with a 170-degree wide-angle lens.
So you can fully capture the wide landscape and get better shots at dusk because more light sources can reach the sensor and the image looks brighter. Unfortunately the lens does not have a zoom function. However, the camera has a gyro image stabilisation. Here are some snapshots of the Rollei 530, all pictures completely unprocessed.
The camera also has a loudspeaker and a microphone. The latter is never particularly good with action cameras, especially in the waterproof housing the audio recording quality leaves a lot to be desired. But it is a fact that the sound doesn’t play a big role in underwater recordings anyway.
Wifi and Bluetooth are available for wireless control. Both wireless systems have a range of about 10 meters. A Bluetooth remote control is included in the scope of delivery, with which you can control the camera (start/stop recording, take a picture, etc.).
With a fully charged 1050 mAh battery for 4k video recording, the camera lasts just under 35 minutes and 75 minutes in Full HD. With 2 A charging current you need a little bit longer than 2h to fully charge it again.
When recording video, several different settings are available for frame rate and resolution:
- 4K or 3,840 x 2,160 at 30 frames per second
- 2.704 x 1,520 also at 30 fps
- 1.920 x 1,080 30/60 fps possible
- 1.280 x 720 also 30/60 frames per second possible
The Rollei Actioncam 530 does not have an internal fixed memory for storing the recorded files, but a slot for microSDHC cards, which you can use for up to 128 GB (class 10) strong cards.
Operation and recording comfort
You should fully charge the battery before use, as it is only about half full due to the bearing voltage. In the meantime, you can install the app and control the camera later via Wifi. To do so, simply download the application Rollei 530-630 from the Appstore.
Overall, the operation is not particularly complicated. Menu navigation and structure are not too overloaded and everything is actually quite clear.
Sometimes the connection may be interrupted, but this is rather the exception. If you use the Actioncam via Wifi or remote control, we recommend a maximum distance of 5-7 meters. This distance is usually already quite sufficient.
Assets and drawbacks
When evaluating the pros and cons, never forget the price of this action camera – it’s already available for around 100€. We have once again clearly presented the most important positive and negative facts for you:
Advantages:
- High quality 4K camera with high resolution
- Wifi and Bluetooth function
- The action camera is light, compact and easy to use
- 170 degree wide angle lens
- Pretty cheap camera
- Up to 128 Gbyte memory possible (SD card class 10)
Cons:
- Battery life with Ultra-HD is about 35 minutes
Conclusion
Now we have suggested a number of alternatives, but the Rollei Actioncam 530 is still a very good choice if you can do without the remote control.
We therefore recommend that you buy the camera if you do not take full advantage of the wireless control functions or if you only operate the cam directly. It even has a TFT screen on the back and you can view your pictures and recorded videos directly.

Which alternatives are there to the Rollei Actioncam 530?
If you don’t like the disadvantages at all, you can look around for cheaper alternatives. We have selected the best alternatives for action cameras for you:
APEMAN Action Camera 85
The Apeman Action camera is already available for about 85€. It has almost 1000 customer reviews and 4 stars, which indicates that it is of very good quality. Our test also showed that. The price is cheaper than the Rollei Actioncam. It also has a waterproof housing up to 30 m water depth.
A 20 megapixel photo sensor is installed here which also delivers high-resolution video images in 4K resolution. The price/performance ratio is in our opinion better than with the Rollei Cam.
SJCAM SJ8 Pro 4K/60PFS 270
In contrast, the SJCAM SJ8 Pro is clearly more price-intensive. The proud price of about 270€ is due to the fact that the camera has the latest chipset built in, so it can produce high-resolution 4K videos with a speed of up to 60 frames per second.
We have broken down the clear advantages of the SJCAM SJ8 Pro a bit more detailed in this review.
GoPro Hero 5 Black 300
If you decide to invest 300 € in an ActionCam, you might want to think about not choosing the “elite brand” of ActionCams. GoPro is as dominant in this market as DJI is in the drone market.
The manufacturer knows what he’s doing and you can’t really go wrong with the purchase. The GoPro Hero 5 Black is available for about 300 €. It is waterproof up to a depth of 10 meters without a case, but this can be increased with an additional case. It has 12 megapixels and can produce about 30 frames per second at 4K resolution.
Compared to the SJCAM SJ8 it seems to be worse purely in terms of technical data, but it is probably more durable, because there are hardly any action cameras of better quality than the GoPro. High quality workmanship is very important here.
