We bought the Yuneec Mantis Q travel drone and tested it thoroughly. Check out our video review to see what features the Mantis Q has to offer.

Small and compact: Yuneec Mantis Q folding travel drone
The Mantis Q is an affordable quadrocopter whose rotor arms are foldable and thus, when folded, transform the drone into a small compact package that fits into almost any travel bag. The dimensions when folded are: 168 x 96 x 58 mm (LxWxH), when unfolded: 250 x 187 x 58 mm (LxWxH) On this picture my Honor 10 is beside it.
If we compare the Mantis Q with the Typhoon Q5004k, it becomes clear how small the copter actually is.
Both the drone itself and the remote control make a very high-quality impression, as you’d expect from Yuneec. The remote control lies very well in the hand and can carry mobile phones up to a display size of 6 inches.
Voice control, Follow-Me and Journey in test
The mini helicopter brings along a total of 4 different flight modes, which we have all tried out. The mode Journey makes the drone fly backwards and soaring in height. With this mode you can produce beautiful shots even without much previous flight experience.
In the Yuneec Pilot App you can set both altitude and rate of climb. The drone flies on autopilot.
In follow-me mode, you can simply mark an object that the drone will then track. This can be either yourself, a car or a bike.
With the point-of-interest mode, objects can be circled either clockwise or counter-clockwise. Both speed and direction can be set in the app.
This mode also worked well in our test, although the radius flown in stronger winds can lead to not quite circular flight maneuvers. This usually does not happen when there is little wind or no wind, but we did not want to withhold this information from you.

The voice control is a cool feature, but for the time being it is only available in English. This function must be activated within the app, because the drone will only listen to voice commands if it is activated.
With the command “Wake up” the voice control is activated via the mobile phone microphone, afterwards the drone can be given further commands:
- Take off à Brings the drone into the air
- Landing -> The drone is starting its landing approach
- Take a Shot à Foto shoot
- Start Recording à Start video recording
- Stop Recording à Stop video recording
If you really need voice control in practice you have to decide yourself. It is a cool feature, but for me it is not a decisive buying argument.
Photo and video test Mantis Q
Photos are shot with 13MP and can be saved in JPG or raw format, so that the pictures can be post-processed behind.
The camera has a tendency to over-expose the image under standard settings, so I always make a manual correction for my photos beforehand. But with adjusted settings the drone camera shoots nice photos. Here are some snapshots, it was very cloudy, so the colors look a bit pale:
The drone can record videos in three different resolutions, 4k with 30 frames per second, Full-HD also 30 FPS and HD with 60 FPS. Since the camera has an electronic 3-axis image stabilisation, the recordings unfortunately sometimes look a bit blurred.
As you have seen in the test shots, this is of course not comparable to a gimbal stabilization, as the Q500 4k shows.
Furthermore, the stabilization is unfortunately only available up to Full-HD, so 4k video recordings will almost always be a little shaky. If you are not a professional videographer, you will be satisfied with the Full-HD recordings.
Otherwise, you should go straight to the Typhoon Q500 4k, for price-conscious pilots, or the Typhoon H, which produces much better film shots. The Mantis Q, on the other hand, is a travel drone that can be set up quickly on holiday and then capture the moment.

Flight time, range and top speed test
We could not achieve the stated flight time of 33 minutes from the manufacturer in the practical test. Under full load, we stopped at 29:30 minutes, which is definitely an absolute top for a drone in this price class!
A fully charged remote control is sufficient for about 5 to 6 flights, then it has to be recharged. The charging time for the battery is approx. 75 minutes, for the remote control 120 minutes.
We used the full range and could reach a distance of 500m, after that the connection often broke down and the drone returned to the starting point by itself. Within the allowed visibility range of 300m the connection is stable and without delays.
The Return-to-Home function does a good job of returning the Mantis Q to its home point (the place where the GPS was stored from when the drone was launched). You can adjust how high you want the drone to climb to start the flight home.
The maximum speed of 72 km/h is a respectable value, but does not make the drone a racing drone.
Conclusion on the Mantis Q Test
The flight characteristics of the Mantis Q are exemplary and the copter stands like a rock in the surf even in stronger winds.
With the available flight modes, even beginner pilots can produce beautiful shots.
Unfortunately, the drone has no gimbal stabilization, so that videos can sometimes be a little shaky. In my opinion this is the biggest weakness of the drone.
Hobby pilots may be able to live with it, but demanding film producers should turn to another model, such as the Q5004k or the Typhoon H.
Nevertheless the total package is good for the price in any case.
