The YI 4k Plus Action Cam is currently the most powerful model of the Chinese manufacturer YI Technologies on the action cam market.

The little powerhouse is not only supposed to shoot unbelievably good photos, but also to be able to record videos in Ultra-HD at 60 frames per second.

The scope of delivery is very extensive at a price of almost 330€ and even offers an underwater case.

We took a closer look at the model and tested it extensively both above and below water.

You can watch our test report in this video review:

YI 4k Plus Scope of delivery

The scope of delivery is extensive, similar to the competitor of the GoPro Hero 6, but offers a better price.

We bought the camera including an underwater housing because we tried the Actioncam while diving in Egypt.

The camera has a high-quality finish and the casing makes a very stable impression.

On the back of the camera is a 2.2 inch LCD touch display that responds very pleasantly to every touch.

The action camera can also be operated by voice control. It works and reliably recognizes commands from both male and female persons (at least it recognized my girlfriend’s voice very well).

The underwater housing fits perfectly on our diving tool that we bought for the GoPro 4 a few years ago.

The place where the hinge is screwed down is also compatible with the successor models Go Pro Hero 5 and Hero 6 and also for the YI 4k Plus.

On the left side of the YI 4k there is a USB type C port that can be used to either charge the camera, connect an external microphone or connect to a device such as a TV or laptop.

This solution is simple and comfortable, but I would have found it even better if there had been an extra connection for charging and for the TV (mini-HDMI) as well as for the microphone.

This is the case with the Hero 6, but only a small flaw which is not very important in my opinion.

If the scope of delivery is not enough for you, you can easily order a huge additional parts set on Amazon for just under 25€, which supports almost every imaginable construction idea.

You will not only get a strap to carry the camera on your head, but also over 20 different connectors and a handstick on which you can attach the camera. I haven’t seen a better deal for additional equipment for an action camera anywhere else.

YI 4k Plus Actioncam technical data

The 4K Plus, unlike its predecessor YI 4k (Ultra-HD video at 30 FPS), can record video at 4k resolution and 60 frames per second. This is in the hobby and amateur film area the highest of the feelings and leaves nothing to be desired.

Furthermore the Mini-Cam has 12MP and a 5,56cm sensor which should take great pictures.

The battery life should last for 50 minutes with Ultra-HD and 90 minutes with Full-HD.

The camera supports both JPG and RAW formats for images, so that demanding photographers can get the most out of their shots afterwards.

YI 4k Plus practical test: Photo and video check

The photo shots are really good, both in strong and weak light.

At this point, however, it should be noted that in low-light conditions, the image can quickly start to rustle and it is advisable to either adjust the camera settings via the ISO values or to use image post-processing.

The operation via app is very intuitive and connecting via Wifi with the Yi4k Plus is very easy.

Via the Wifi signal the Actioncam can be controlled up to a range of 10m. After that, we noticed smaller dropouts in the connection quality.

This is especially suitable if you want to take selfie photos or if it is cold outside and you want to take northern lights photos from the car (read my review Go Pro Hero 5).

In our test, the battery lasted just under 40 minutes at Ultra-HD resolution and 75 minutes at Full-HD. These rates are good and are in any case sufficient for many nice movies. Nevertheless, we advise you to buy two additional batteries for a reasonable price when buying this cam.

The video recordings in Ultra HD can be taken at up to 60 frames per second and a bitrate of 100Mbps and are really worth seeing and can compete with the video material of Mavic Air (4k 30 FPS but 100Mbps).

60 FPS combined with 100 Mbit/s in 4K resolution provide for cinema-quality Hollywood movie recordings that can inspire even the most demanding filmmaker.

Not only does the picture look incredibly dynamic and fluid, but the colors and contrasts are also shown to their best advantage thanks to the built-in sensor.

The video processing on the camera itself works flawlessly thanks to the fast Ambarella H2 processor and ensures fast operation without any delays.

When using a 64GB memory card, you can store about 80 minutes of footage with a resolution of 4k 60FPS and about 130 minutes of footage with 4k 30 FPS. Afterwards it is either overwritten or has to be pulled onto an external data medium.

The YI 4k Plus Cam offers a stabilizer that really does make the image much more stable and jerk-free. This works up to a resolution of 4k 30FPS, unfortunately not yet with Ultra HD and 60 frames per second.

The Yi fits on the headband that I bought with my GoPro 5 and can therefore easily be attached to my head for a cool stunt shot. It looks like this:

Because of similar bindings of the housing on the bottom the camera in the underwater housing fits also on our underwater station which we already showed on some other actioncams.

If the underwater housing really keeps what it promises we will test it in our next diving holiday, which is just around the corner.

The sound is average as with almost every action cam, but action cameras are not designed to capture particularly good sound, but rather to offer excellent video quality with good dynamics during fast, flashlike movements.

There is the possibility to connect an external microphone via the USB-C port on the side. The Action Cam is therefore only conditionally suitable as a selfiecam, provided you want to film yourself for a YouTube video product review or similar.

Conclusion Yi 4k Plus Mini Actioncam

I find the Actioncam absolutely top and it offers in my opinion the best price-performance ratio in this segment of Actioncams that support 4k/60FPS.

The film shots in Ultra-HD and 60 frames per second are really hollywood-ready and will inspire even demanding filmers.

Compared to the top dog, the Go Pro 6, the accessories are cheap and the quality is really good. The app function and the simple operation also convinced me.

Currently the YI 4k Plus is available for sale at Amazon.

If you are looking for much cheaper but still powerful actioncams, then take a closer look at the Apeman, Jeemak or the Tec Tec.
