is an
affordable action camera in the low to medium price range. Compared to its predecessor model, it is equipped with a 16 megapixel camera sensor from Sony instead of only 8 megapixels.
In Full-HD up to 60 fps are possible and the wide angle lens has an angle of 170 degrees, which is also an improvement on the Braun Champion 4K.
Further technical properties
The camera offers simple and cool recording functions. In the menu you can choose between timelapse, slow-motion and loop recording. Photos and videos are stored on a microSDHC card, which can have up to 64 Gbyte.
An integrated image stabilizer calculates possible image errors and makes sure that you can produce photos in pin-sharp quality. During leisure activities such as cycling, motorcycling or climbing, blurred images can occur when taking pictures if no stabilizer is integrated in the system.
If you take a look at the back of the ActionCam, you will find a 2″ TFT screen on which the shots can be viewed. Furthermore there is the possibility to connect the cam with your smartphone.
This is what WiFi is for, which establishes a connection between camera and smartphone over a radius of up to 20 meters. Compared to other ActionCams, this is already good. There are models where the WiFi connection only reaches 5-10 meters and then the connection is interrupted.
To use the app, you just have to scan the bottom of the box with a barcode scanner and then install the pop-up app.
The recording time ranges between 70 and 90 minutes. Depending on whether you use WiFi and which video functions are active, the actual time you can film may differ from these times.
The 900 mAh strong Li-Ion battery is however exchangeable. We strongly recommend you to buy one or two spare batteries. Nothing is more annoying than when the ActionCam suddenly runs out of battery power and the rest of your shots are missing.
The previous model was waterproof to a depth of 60 meters, but the Braun Champion 4k II ActionCam is only certified waterproof to 30 meters. It is not clear why the manufacturer has accepted a deterioration here.
But it is a fact that some divers don’t have a diving license anyway, which allows them to dive so deep. And most of the time you don’t go that deep, but are content with 20 – 25 meters depth.
For deeper waters you will have to use another model. However, the manufacturer probably knew that probably only a few buyers need the ActionCam for such extreme cases. In addition, one should not forget that the Braun Champion 4k II ActionCam costs about 40% less than its predecessor!
As usual with ActionCams, this camera has a mini-HDMI and a USB 2.0 port.
The action camera has a compact, reasonable size. The dimensions are 23 x 60 x 43 mm, which is neither too big nor too small. It’s not too heavy either, weighing only 64 g with battery, without about 48 g.
Overview of resolution, image and video data
As already mentioned, the ActionCam from Braun has a 16 MP camera sensor (SONY 179). For photos the following resolution values can be set: 16, 12, 8, 5, 2 Megapixel.
Video resolution is possible up to 4K. At 4K and 2.7K a maximum Fps of 30 is possible. Further resolution values and their corresponding frame rates are: 1920 x 1080 – 60 or 30 fps, 1280 x 720 – 120, 60 or 30 fps
Standard resolution for videos: 4KStandard resolution
for photos: 4032 x 4000 pixels
Videos are always saved in MOV format and photos in JPG format.
Scope of delivery – What’s inside?
The scope of delivery is sufficient. With other models you get a little more accessories. But one has to say that the most necessary things are included and the price is very good in relation to the technical equipment of the cam.
We didn’t look too bad when we unpacked it, the type of packaging is a bit unusual. The camera is mounted above a black package and together with it in a transparent plastic box, which sits in another large box.
When the model is delivered and you have opened the parcel, pull off the plastic box and open the black parcel with the cam on top. You should proceed carefully. The black package contains all the remaining accessories.
The following parts are then included in the delivery:
– A second rear panel with slots for audio-
Various cable ties-
A bicycle bracket-
Straps for helmet fixation-
2 x adhesive bracket-
Housing bracket for the cam to be mounted without waterproof case-
Various adapters, attachments and brackets –
Instructions in many different languages – of course also in German
Not included, but needed:
– microSDHC card (you can use up to 64 Gbyte)
Picture quality – Is the camera practical?
The menu navigation for setting the different modes and resolution values is structured and not overloaded. This can be controlled with the buttons on the right of the cam.
Recorded pictures and videos are in our opinion above average. If we had to grade them, we would give photos and videos taken with this cam a grade of 2.
Videos taken during the night are quite good, but also not very outstanding. But the camera lens takes enough light from the surroundings so that the picture and video material does not appear too dark. Detail and depth of field are very good and the shots are very nice.
For the following action video recording I drove a piece with my Hoverboard. You can see the brown camera rate video here:
Conclusion
If you compare the Braun Champion 4k II ActionCam with other models in this price range, it performs outstandingly well. Sound, photo and video quality, which you get here for the price, are above average.
You can record all your leisure activities with it. The compactness and mobility of the Braun Champion 4k II ActionCam makes it ideal for all kinds of applications.
Dirt, humidity and strong temperature fluctuations do not bother it. The camera market also offers a wide range of other models, but many of them are not as good value for money as the Braun Champion!
So if your budget is limited and you want good quality at a fair price, we can warmly recommend this camera. Here you can buy the action camera*.
